Before you start
- Define scope and time window (e.g., one week).
- Set categories (trash, recycling, organics, specials).
- Prepare PPE and a safe sorting space.
Measure
- Total weight by category (kg or lbs).
- Contamination rate in recycling and organics.
- Top 10 items by volume.
Actions
- Fix the top 3 contamination sources.
- Improve bin placement and signage.
- Add or improve special drop-off streams (batteries, e-waste).
Tip: Repeat monthly until contamination stabilizes, then quarterly.
